LEARN MORE ABOUT OCELOTS

ocelot   Leopardus Pardalis - ENDANGERED

The ocelot is a medium size feline that reaches an overall length of 3 feet and an average weight of 35 pounds.  Their name comes from an Aztec word, which means “field tiger.”  These beautiful animals have a coat that ranges from gray to rust, with black streaks and spots, which provides excellent camouflage.  Found throughout Mexico, South America and southern parts of the United States, the ocelot prefers densely wooded areas.  The ocelot is a nocturnal animal and feeds mainly on birds and small mammals.

It is believed that the ocelot is monogamous and often mates for life.  Females typically give birth to 1 to 2 offspring.  Cubs are born in well-protected areas such as rock crevices or hollow trees.  Although cubs are born with fur, their eyes are closed for the first few days of their life.  The female is responsible for care of the young and often leaves them in dense vegetation while she hunts.  The average lifespan of the ocelot is about 14 years.
